Russia Admits To Underreporting COVID-19 Deaths

Moscow: Russia has admitted that it is currently the country with the third-highest number of COVID-19 deaths. Its death toll is more than three times of what was previously reported.

New numbers show more than 1,86,000 Russians have died from the coronavirus. Earlier, the official number was 55,265.

Russia is now ahead of India sitting behind the US and Brazil.

The number of infections in Russia has been more than 3 million and the low fatality rate had raised eyebrows.

On Monday, government agency Rosstat said the total number of deaths from all causes between January and November had risen by 2,29,700. Deputy Prime Minister Tatiana Golikova said “more than 81 per cent” of that was due to COVID-19, meaning more than 1,86,000 COVID-19 deaths in that period.

President Putin had previously said lockdowns are not needed if people follow the rules.

The country is counting high on its vaccine – Sputnik V. It is believed more than 7 lakh doses have been administered. However, there is no clarity on the numbers yet.
