Salaries, Allowances, Pensions Of MPs Increased; How Much Will They Receive Now?

New Delhi: The Central government has raised salaries, allowances and pensions of Members of Parliament (MPs), effective from April 1, 2023.

As per a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs on Monday, the salary of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members has been increased from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.24 lakh per month, and daily allowance from Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500.

Pension for ex-MPs has been increased from Rs 25,000 per month to Rs 31,000 per month, while additional pension for each year of service beyond five years has been hiked from Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500.

It’s after seven years that salaries and allowances for sitting and former MPs have been increased. In 2018, base salary of MPs was set at Rs 1,00,000 per month.

The current revision of salaries, allowances, and pensions was announced during the Budget Session of Parliament.

Other Entitlements Of MPs

Other allowances MPs receive are — Rs 70,000 as constituency allowance to cover costs of maintaining their offices and engaging with voters in their respective districts; Rs 60,000 per month as office allowance; annual allowance for phone and internet usage; mileage allowance for road travel.

MPs also enjoy 34 free domestic flights per year for themselves and their families, first-class train travel at any time for professional and personal use, 50,000 free units of electricity and 4,000 kilolitres of water annually.

The Central government also provides them housing and accommodation.
