Sambalpur Court Vandalism: Orissa HC Reserves Order On Bail Pleas Of Lawyers
Cuttack: The Orissa High Court on Thursday reserved its order on the bail petition of the lawyers who have been arrested in connection with vandalism in a court in Sambalpur.
The High Court heard the bail application of 30 lawyers for second time and reserved its order. Earlier, the petitioners had moved the Supreme Court after the High Court rejected their bail petitions. After the apex court refused to entertain the bail application, they filed fresh petitions in the High Court.
Following their arrest, they had filed for bail in the district and sessions court in Sambalpur which had also set it aside.
On last Saturday, some lawyers of the High Court sat on a hunger strike on the court premises demanding hearing of bail applications of the Sambalpur advocates.
It may be noted that the lawyers were arrested for the vandalism in the chamber of district judge Manas Barik during a protest demanding setting up of a separate bench of the Orissa High Court on December 13 last year.
Following the incident, the Bar Council of India (BCI) had suspended the licences of all members of the Sambalpur District Bar Association. Later, it had restored the licenses of some Bar members.
