New Delhi: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) will conduct a nationwide ‘Save the Saviours’ protest on June 18 against multiple incidents of assault on doctors.
IMA chief Dr JA Jayalal said on Saturday that such incidents have increased a lot in recent months, especially against those who are working on frontlines, and demanded that a law be introduced under CrPC and IPC for protection of doctors and healthcare workers.
“We demand that the government introduce a central protection law under the provisions of CrPC and IPC and also ensure that all government and private hospitals have a mandatory security structure,” ANI quoted Jayalal as saying.
“Doctors serving in COVID-19 wards have been brutally assaulted in Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and West Bengal. It is the government’s responsibility to ensure that frontline workers are safe while battling a pandemic,” he added.
The protest on June 18 won’t affect normal operation of hospitals, he asserted.
IMA members in states and local branches will wear black badges, masks and ribbons to demonstrate their protest. Doctors have also been asked to organize awareness campaigns against violence targeting healthcare professionals.
