New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted bail to Indrani Mukerjea, the prime accused in the 2015 Sheena Bora murder case.
“We are granting bail to Indrani Mukerjea. 6.5 years is too long a time,” bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao, BR Gavai and AS Bopanna noted. The apex court refrained from making any observations on the merits of the case but said that the trial is unlikely to end soon, Bar&Bench reported.
“We are not making comments on the merits of the case. Even if 50 per cent of witnesses are given by the prosecution, the trial would not be over soon. She will be released on bail subject to satisfaction of the trial court. The same conditions imposed on Peter Mukerjea will also be imposed on her,” the bench said.
Indrani was arrested in 2015 along with her then husband Peter Mukerjea and her former husband Sanjeev Khanna in connection with the killing of her daughter. Peter was granted bail in 2020.
Sheena (24) was allegedly strangled to death in a car by Indrani Mukerjea, her then driver Shyamvar Rai and former husband Sanjeev Khanna in April 2012. The body was later burnt in a forest in neighbouring Raigad district. The CBI had claimed the remains found belonged to Sheena and that DNA evidence proved this.
She allegedly planned the murder since her daughter was in a live-in relationship with Rahul Mukerjea, son of Peter and his earlier wife.
