Bhubaneswar: All elementary and secondary schools in Odisha remained closed on Saturday on account of Mahalaya, which marks the beginning of the much-awaited festival of Durga Puja.
The School and Mass Education department had issued a notice in this regard on Friday.
It is believed that on this day, goddess Durga embarked on her journey from Kailash, the abode of Lord Shiva, to Earth, to descend upon her devotees. This event is narrated in the mythical story of Mahalaya, a recitation known as “Mahishasura Mardini.”
It also marks the end of the 15-day long Shraddha rituals.
The notice further said that the schools will remain shut for 10 days (from October 20 to 29) for Puja vacation.
All District Education Officers (DEOs) and Block Education Officers (BEOs) are directed to take the necessary action in this regard.
