New Delhi: Trouble is mounting for Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma, from whose house a stack of cash was allegedly found after a fire incident on Holi.
Even as the Supreme Court recommended Justice Varma’s transfer to Allahabad Court, his parent court, the bar association of Allahabad HC has sought the impeachment of Justice Varma over the cash-at-residence row.
In a resolution passed on Monday, the bar association requested the Chief Justice of India (CJI) to immediately recommend to the Central government to draw impeachment proceedings against Justice Varma.
The resolution also urged the CJI to immediately permit filing of an FIR and investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Enforcement Directorate (ED) and other investigative agencies against Justice Varma and, if needed, he be taken into custody for questioning, reported Live Law.
The three-member in-house inquiry set up by the top court to investigate Justice Varma is ‘questionable’ and ‘unacceptable’ to the judicial fraternity, the Bar Association stated, adding that all judgments passed by Justice Varma should be scrutinised.
“Continuance of Justice Yashwant Varma any further is dangerous for the democracy as it eroded ‘Public Faith’ which is the only power available with judicial system. If faith gone, everything gone and nation will collapse,” the Bar Association said in its resolution, and once again opposed the transfer of Justice Varma to the Allahabad High Court.
That plea, however, didn’t work as the Supreme Court confirmed that the Collegium had sent its resolution to the Centre, recommending Justice Varma’s repatriation to Allahabad HC.
