Second Incident In Three Days In Odisha: ‘Drunk’ Teacher Thrashes Students In Gajapati

Gajapati: A teacher of Dengesakhal upper primary school at Ladiguda village in Odisha’s Gajapati district was suspended on Saturday for allegedly thrashing and injuring 16 students in an inebriated condition.

The Block Education Officer (BEO) of Mohana suspended the teacher identified as Jagdish Behera.

According to sources, Behera came to school allegedly in an inebriated condition at around 3 pm on Friday and asked questions to the students.

Thereafter, he allegedly thrashed the students who failed to answer his questions. The students sustained injuries and some were admitted to hospital, according to reports.

“I don’t think I have actually thrashed them. But I admit that I was drunk while going to school,” Behera told media persons on Friday.

“I don’t have any problem if any action is taken against me,” he added.

Angry parents detained Behera and handed him over to police after lodging a complaint against him.

It is pertinent to mention that Nityananda Barik, principal of an Adarsh Vidyalaya in Odisha’s Keonjhar district, who allegedly beat up a Class VI boy with an iron rod, was suspended by the Odisha Adarsh Vidyalaya Sangathan (OAVS) on Thursday.
