Bhubaneswar: In a new turn to the ruckus during a lecture of JNU Professor Surajit Mazumdar in Utkal University on Sunday morning, the ABVP activists staged a demonstration in front of the main gate of the university in the evening.
Hundreds of students of the university and members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) sat on a dharna before the main entrance to the campus. Holding National Flag, they raised slogans against Prof Mazumdar. They also set fire to a banner of the seminar as a mark of their protest.
Claiming that the seminar, organised by Citizens’ Forum, was an attempt to downgrade Indian Constitution and National Education Policy, the agitating students alleged that Prof Mazmudar tried to whip up anti-national sentiments among the youths.
“We will not tolerate such anti-national activities in any educational institutions of Odisha. It is a well-planned and deliberate strategy to divide the youths and create a division in the society,” said state secretary of ABVP Arijit Patnaik.
He questioned how the university authorities issued permission to conduct the seminar in the campus on a holiday and demanded an investigation into the matter. He also said the ABVP would intensify agitation against the anti-national elements and hold protest in all campuses in the state to expose them.
