Hyderabad: Shubman Gill set the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on fire and broke a clutch of records with a sensational double century in the first ODI against New Zealand here on Wednesday.
The 23-year-old became the youngest cricketer to hit an ODI double century as he plundered 208 off 149 balls, embellished with 19 fours and 9 sixes, to break a clutch of records.
The stylish right-hander joined an elite list of Indian batters who have scored double hundreds in the 50-over format. His knock today made him the youngest Indian to achieve the milestone, replacing Ishan Kishan who had scored 210 in the final ODI against Bangladesh just over a month ago.
Kishan was dropped from the playing XI right after his 210, but Shubman has justified the team management’s decision to give him priority over the left-handed wicketkeeper-batsman.
So dominating was Shubman on Thursday after skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss that he contributed 60% of India’s huge total – 349/8.
The next best score was Rohit’s 34, followed by 31 from Suryakumar Yadav.
