Bhubaneswar: The Shikharchandi temple gate in Bhubaneswar was closed and movement of people restricted in the surrounding area on Saturday for public safety after two elephants were seen roaming the hill.
Officials said the restriction, imposed by the Forest Department, will remain in force at the popular picnic site in the capital city till further notice.
After locking the temple entrance gate, the forest department also informed the Infocity police station underlining the need for ensuring the safety of the public, especially picnickers and tourists.
Locals said the two elephants, both tuskers, have been on the hill for the past five days, feeding on banyan and peepal trees.
The animals are searching for food and have been camping in the area. Officials of the Chandaka forest division confirmed the presence of the elephants, and tourists have been kept away as a precaution.
The Sikharchandi shrine will remain shut until the elephants move out of the area, authorities confirmed. The decision was taken purely on safety grounds.
