Berhampur: People in southern Odisha have started reaping the benefits of PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG:MBY).

By facilitating the scheme’s implementation, TP Southern Odisha Distribution Limited (TPSODL) has been empowering consumers to harness solar energy from their own rooftops, and in some cases, even eliminating electricity bills completely.

A total of 126 consumers have received zero electricity bills, as their energy needs are being met entirely through rooftop solar systems installed under the PMSG:MBY scheme. Not only are these solar installations lightening up their homes, they are also easing financial stress.

With its structured approach that is focused on grassroots awareness, technical handholding and streamlined implementation, TPSODL is playing a key role in the region’s clean energy transformation.

TPSODL has helped instal 513 rooftop solar plants so far across eight districts its jurisdiction, with Ganjam leading the way (331). Koraput comes next with 79, followed by Rayagada (33), Boudh (30), Gajapati (24), Kandhamal (7) and Nabarangpur (6)

PMSG:MBY is especially beneficial for households with monthly electricity consumption of up to 300 units. By installing a 3 kW rooftop solar system, which can generate around 300 units per month, these households can get their energy needs — powering fans, lights, televisions, refrigerators and other essential appliances – and have their electricity bills reduced to zero, thereby lowering their monthly expenses.

Other advantages of rooftop solar plants include minimal maintenance, long-term reliability and a lower carbon footprint. Also, financial subsidies from the Central and state governments help beneficiaries as the initial investment becomes affordable and attractive.

TPSODL has launched an aggressive awareness drive, covering urban areas and villages across southern Odisha. These campaigns educate consumers on the benefits of solar, guide them through the application process, and connect them with reliable installation partners.

“This movement toward PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is not just about reducing bills — it’s about empowering people. We’re seeing the beginning of an energy shift where the consumer becomes the producer. At TPSODL, our goal is to make this transition smooth, supported, and sustainable. We’re proud of the impact so far and committed to scaling it further, ensuring every eligible household can benefit from clean, reliable solar power,” said Amit Kumar Garg, CEO, TPSODL.
