Mumbai: A high-speed BMW crashed on Mumbai’s Coastal Road and fell off a bridge in the early hours of Sunday, killing three occupants and leaving another in critical condition.
According to police, the black BMW was speeding from Marine Drive towards Haji Ali when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The car struck a boundary wall before plunging off the bridge.
The Coastal Road Control Room was alerted to the accident at approximately 5:20 am.
All four people inside the car were taken to Nair Hospital, where doctors pronounced three of them dead on arrival, as reported by NDTV.
The deceased have been identified as Shanay Gajjal (21), Dhirya Seth (17) and an unidentified 25-year-old man, whose identity remains to be established
A fourth occupant, an unidentified 20-year-old male, was admitted to the trauma ward and is fighting for his life.
The force of the impact was so severe that the BMW smashed through a signboard suspended from the bridge before going over the edge. The car sustained severe damage: the roof was caved in, the windshield was reduced to shards, and the front section was mangled beyond recognition, with the bumper ripped away and internal parts exposed.
Mumbai Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The tragedy follows a string of rash-driving incidents on the Coastal Road.
On September 3, Mumbai Police registered cases against six to seven high-end vehicles —including a Lamborghini, a BMW M2 and a BMW Z4 — for racing inside the Coastal Road tunnel. The offenders were booked for negligent driving and endangering life or personal safety under Sections 281 and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS).
