Stadia Infra Budget In Rourkela & Bhubaneswar For Hockey World Cup Crosses Rs 800 Cr

Bhubaneswar: The cost for construction of the international hockey stadium at Rourkela to be named after Bisra Munda for Odisha Men’s Hockey World Cup-2023 has escalated to 180 crore from 120 crore amid a steep hike in steel prices.

The revised project cost of Rs 875 crore for development of the new hockey stadium and construction of sports infrastructure at Kalinga Stadium got the cabinet nod on Thursday. They would jointly host the quadrennial world championship from January 13-29.

The Kalinga Stadium is being upgraded with various facilities like India’s first indoor athletic stadium, indoor aquatic centre, centre tennis court, Hockey HPC building and accommodation facilities, an official release said.

While the project was approved on May 8, 2021, by the Cabinet at a total budget of Rs 432.454 crore, including all taxes and IDCO charges, the design and safety parameters were upgraded to make the structured disaster resilient based on site conditions and technical vetting by experts including IT Bombay and stadium experts from national/international federations

“This upgradation had an implication on the quantities of structural components. The price escalation of steel, POL, aluminium etc. is also a significant component in increasing the total project cost. Further, an increase in the GST rates from 12 to 18% has contributed to the escalation of the project cost,” it said.
