The National Fire Agency said authorities were in the process of assessing damage.
This was the second major earthquake to hit the island this week, following a 6.0 magnitude quake on Wednesday.
Taiwan is prone to earthquakes as it lies near the junction of two tectonic plates.
In the deadliest earthquake in Taiwan, a tremor of 7.3 magnitude killed more than 2,000 people in 1999.
In 2016, more than 100 people died in an earthquake in southern Taiwan.
