Washington: Former US President Barack Obama once broke a schoolmate’s nose after being at the receiving end of a racial slur during a locker room fight.
Obama revealed this in an episode of Spotify podcast with Bruce Springsteen.
“Listen, when I was in school, I had a friend. We played basketball together. And one time we got into a fight and he called me a c—… It’s one of those things that — where he might not even known what a c— was… what he knew was, ‘I can hurt you by saying this’,” Obama said.
“And I remember I popped him in the face and broke his nose. And we were in the locker room,” USA’s first black President told the ‘Born in the USA’ singer.
“I explained to him… I said, ‘Don’t you ever call me something like that’,” Obama recalled, sharing the incident from his school life for the first time in public.
H felt hurling racial slurs comes down to ‘an assertion of status’ over the other.
Obama has always spoken strongly about impacts of racism on American society.
