According to report, Mahakalapada Police had arrested Abinash Paitala alias Musa on Saturday night for stealing a mobile phone. After interrogation, police put him in the lock-up.
At around 10 pm, police took Musa to attend the nature’s call. However, he managed to escape. Despite frantic search, police could not find him.
However, he was found hanging from the staircase railing of Haladhar Mallick’s house in the village in the early hours of Sunday.
Tension ran high in the area after the irate villagers staged a road blockade at Balana Chhak on Jambu-Marshaghai Road. The family members alleged that he took the extreme step due to police excesses.
Following information, senior district and a team of police officials led by the Additional SP Arun Kumar Behera rushed to the spot. The blockade was withdrawn after the district administration announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2.10 lakh to the next of the kin of the deceased and promised a job of Home Guard to one of the family members.
