Bhubaneswar: Days after being suspended from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Suniti Mund on Monday alleged that she was being harassed and threatened by an individual during the last few months.
Mund, who was BJP nominee for the 2022 election to the post of Mayor of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, further alleged that Sudhanshu Nayak of Bhandaripokhari had demanded Rs 20 lakh from her over two months ago.
“The man had even threatened to destroy my political career and defame me if the money is not paid. I received the threat over two months ago and people can see the result now. I have been suspended from BJP,” she claimed.
Describing the situation as grim in politics, Mund said if she can be harassed and tortured, the condition of other women can be imagined. Women in politics are under tremendous pressure as they are subjected to harassment and torture, she claimed.
No senior BJP leader was immediately available to comment on the allegation made by Mund. No reaction also came from Sudhanshu Nayak.
Notably, Mund was suspended for anti-party activities.
According to sources, Mund was suspended on the basis of allegations levelled by a BJP MLA candidate, who lost the assembly election in Bhubaneswar. The MLA candidate had alleged discrepancy in management of funds assigned to her for social media campaign during polls and attributed it to the defeat. After conducting an internal inquiry, the state unit of the saffron party decided to suspend Mund from BJP.
