New Delhi: The Supreme Court questioned the Central government’s wisdom on Wednesday, asking it to produce the files pertaining to Arun Goel’s appointment as election commissioner (EC).
A five-judge bench led by Justice KM Joseph directed Attorney General R Venkataramani to produce the files on Thursday (November 24).
Goel took charge on November 21, filling up one commissioner’s post which was vacant since Sushil Chandra retired as chief election commissioner (CEC) in May.
The top court observed that it would have been more appropriate if the appointment was made after knowing the outcome of constitution bench’s hearing on selection mechanism of CEC and ECs.
“Because this appointment was made after we began hearing this case, let’s see how the appointment is made. You should not have any danger since you say everything is hunky dory,” the bench said.
During the course of hearing, the Supreme Court bench said that the country needs a CEC like T N Seshan, who won’t allow himself to be bulldozed.
