Bhubaneshwar: Tata Power-led Odisha Discoms have introduced a transformative digital solution- Suraksha Kavach for safety of consumers and operational excellence.
This technology-integrated safety shield has redefined the high-tension (HT) network operations across Odisha by embedding Permit to Work (PTW) mechanism under a robust digital framework with strict adherence to standardised safety protocols.
“Suraksha Kavach is a comprehensive tool that unifies critical aspects of power distribution operations with an uncompromising focus on safety and efficiency. Every work activity on HT lines is executed only after securing a digital permit via this platform, embedding standard safety protocols into day-to-day field operations. The system includes features such as an embedded equipment database, pre-mapped authorizations, structured safety checklists, and real-time communication capabilities via SMS and WhatsApp, all of which contribute to a zero-compromise safety culture,” a company release said.
It further stated that the tool’s multi-platform accessibility through web portals, mobile apps, and SAP integration ensures that even ground-level staff, such as linemen and substation operators, can access and use it with ease, regardless of technical proficiency.
“Beyond internal efficiency and safety, Suraksha Kavach is significantly enhancing the consumer experience. By integrating data from Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Energy Audit Groups (EAG), and standardised safety and operations workflows, the platform enables proactive communication with consumers. Customers receive advance SMS notifications about planned power outages, allowing them to prepare ahead of time and reducing inconvenience.”
The generated data from Suraksha Kavach is also used to enable real-time visibility of power supply outage information to consumers on the website. In addition to this, the quality of power supply availability is also available to consumers on the discom website automatically through a real-time linkage, it said.
“The platform ensures quicker, safer, and more coordinated field execution of both planned and unplanned maintenance activities. This directly results in faster restoration times, reduced downtime, and a more reliable power supply, thereby improving overall consumer satisfaction.
The tool also supports real-time monitoring and performance tracking, with centrally consolidated data, making it accessible across teams and locations. As a result, it is used to automatically generate daily, monthly, and annual metrics. By eliminating manual interventions, it ensures data integrity and empowers teams to make informed, data-driven decisions to continuously improve service quality.
“To date, over 21 lakh permits have been issued through Suraksha Kavach in Odisha, reflecting its wide adoption and impact,” it added.
