Dubai: A brutal assault by David Warner and Mitchell Marsh handed five-time ODI world champions Australia their maiden T20 World Cup title here on Sunday night.
It was once again a case of winning the toss and winning the match.
World Test champions New Zealand, asked to bat first by Australian skipper Aaron Finch, put up 172 for 4 on the board thanks to a sublime 85 off 48 balls (10 fours and 3 sixes) by captain Kane Williamson. But like in the two semifinals, a decent-looking total was not enough as Australia reached the target with 8 wickets and 7 balls to spare.

Finch was dismissed by Trent Boult in the third over, but that didn’t deter Warner and Marsh from going after the New Zealand bowlers. The duo plundered 92 runs in under 10 overs to put Australia firmly on the path to victory.
Warner fell to New Zealand’s best bowler Boult (2/18 in 4 overs), but not before he had scored 53 off 38 balls which included 4 fours and 3 sixes.
Marsh continued with his power hitting and remained unbeaten with 77 which came off just 50 balls, with 6 fours and 4 sixes. Glenn Maxwell joined the party with a quickfire 28 not out off 18 balls to finish off the job.
Scores: New Zealand 172/4 in 20 overs. Australia 173/2 in 18.5 overs.
Result: Australia won by 8 wickets.
