Balasore, being in the red zone, life was quite difficult in the city, especially for the small food stalls and restaurants. They were mostly dependent on day to day business prior to coronavirus. With sudden lockdown, life came to a halt, they were left with limited resources and almost everyone’s family had to see a tough time.
A week ago, things started to ease down a little. Government allowed takeaways and this can be considered a respite for them.
Dinesh Kumar Pal, who owns a shop in Fandi Bazaar, said, “I am really glad to return to the shop. Since we have limited options, we can serve packed food to the customers. But this can help us to a good extent in such a grave situation. We understand the government’s problems and why there are certain restrictions. We will make sure to follow all the rules and maintain social distancing.”
He further said in the absence of home delivery system like big cities, he has kept own delivery boys. It provides employment to some youths in the city.
With six members of his family depending on him, it is necessary for him to get back to work, Pal said. But all shop-keepers are as enthusiastic.
Fandi Bazaar, which used to remain crowded, wears a deserted look. Though takeaways are allowed, people are hesitant to come to the market or order food from outside due to fear of contacting coronavirus, said some shop-keepers.
Raju, a shop-keeper said, “It will take some time for normal life to return. Till then, we have to be patient. We believe that the government will help us in every situation and we are hopeful for better business in future.”
