Mumbai: Tata’s new premium hatchback has created quite a stir on social media since its recent unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show. It has now been revealed that Hyundai i20 and Maruti Suzuki Baleno competitor will come with three engine choices.
According to a report by Autocar India, the Tata Altroz will get the following engines:
- 1.2-litre 85hp petrol (from the Tigor)
- 1.2-litre 102hp turbo petrol (from the Nexon)
- 1.5-litre diesel (from the Nexon)
Tata claims that the refinement levels in the petrol engines will be upped to have best-in-class NVH levels. The 1.2-litre Tiago/Tigor petrol engine will have a balancer shaft to smoothen out the typical three-cylinder engine thrums.
Interestingly, the Altroz will be approximately 15kg lighter than its younger sibling – the Tiago. At approximately 980kg, the turbo-petrol variant is expected to have a high power-to-weight ratio.
The power of the last two engines has been reportedly detuned due to the torque limitation of the five-speed TA-65 gearbox, apart for aiming for better fuel economy numbers. The six-speed gearbox in the Nexon could not be used due to packaging constraints, reported Autocar.
The Altroz is expected to be launched in Q3-Q4 of 2019. An electric version with 250-300 km range with a price tag of Rs 10 lakh is expected in two years.
