Mumbai: Tata Sons and Tata Trusts on Friday announced the formation of a Rs 500 crore welfare trust for the victims of the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad on June 12.
Tata Sons and Tata Trusts committed to contributing Rs 250 crore each to the trust.
All but one of the 242 people on board the London Gatwick-bound AI-171 flight died as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft crashlanded into a medical college hostel building, close to the Sardar Vallabhbhai International Airport, just 32 seconds after take-off. The final toll rose to 260 as 19 persons lost their lives on ground.
‘The AI-171 Memorial and Welfare Trust’, which has been registered in Mumbai, will provide both immediate — ex gratia payment of Rs 1 crore — and long-term support to the dependents/next-of-kin of the deceased, to those who were injured, and to all others who are directly or collaterally affected by the accident.
The Trust will also support trauma recovery efforts for first responders, healthcare workers, and disaster relief personnel involved in the aftermath.
Initial appointees in the five-member governing board of the Trust include former Tata executive S Padmanabhan and Tata Sons’ General Counsel Sidharth Sharma.
Tata Group will also help in the reconstruction of the damaged BJ Medical College Hostel.
