Temp To Drop In Odisha From Today Amid Thunderstorms With 50-60 Kmph Winds

Bhubaneswar: Odisha can expect some respite from the hot and humid conditions with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting a dip in the day temperature from Sunday.

According to the weather agency, the temperature across the state may fall by 2-4°C during the next 2 days due to intensification of thunderstorm activity, which is likely to continue till April 8. “While cyclonic circulation over north Odisha & neighbourhood has been less marked, another cyclonic circulation over south Coastal Andhra Pradesh & neighbourhood now lies over westcentral Bay of Bengal off south coastal Andhra Pradesh,” it said.

The regional meteorological office has predicted thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds with speed of 50-60 kmph in the afternoon/evening hours at isolated places in the districts of Mayurbhanj, Balasore
& Bhadrak on April 5. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (40-50 kmph) may also in Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Nuapada, Balangir, Bargarh, Sonepur, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Deogarh and Keonjhar during this period. There is also a forecast for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (30-40 kmph) at isolated places in Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Angul, Boudh, Rayagada and Dhenkanal.

On April 6, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds with speed of 40-50 kmph is likely in the afternoon/evening hours at isolated places in the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Ganjam, Gajapati and Rayagada. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (30-40 kmph) may also occur in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Boudh,
Dhenkanal, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Koraput, Malkangiri, Puri, Khurda and Nayagarh.

The intensity of thunderstorm activity may increase again from April 7, when thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds with speed of 50-60 kmph may occur in the afternoon/evening hours at isolated places in the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore and Bhadrak. Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (40-50 kmph) is also likely at isolated places in Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Dhenkanal and Rayagada. Similar weather conditions with wind speed at 30-40 kmph may also prevail in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Angul, Deogarh, Bargarh, Boudh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Malkangiri and Koraput.

On April 8, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds with speed of 50-60 kmph may continue in the afternoon/evening hours at isolated places in the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore and Bhadrak. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (40-50 kmph) are also likely at isolated places in  Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Angul, Dhenkanal and Sundargarh. Similar weather conditions with wind speed at 30-40 kmph may also prevail in Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Malkangiri, Koraput and Rayagada.

On April 9, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (40-50 kmph) may occur at isolated places in the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack and Jagatsinghpur.
Similar weather conditions with wind speed at 30-40 kmph may also prevail in Sundargarh, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Koraput, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati districts.

The IMD has issued an orange warning for Mayurbhanj, Balasore and Bhadrak on day 1, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore and Bhadrak on day 3-4, where strong wind may damage plantation, horticulture, standing crops and vulnerable structures. People have been advised to keep watch on weather and take shelter during thunderstorm activity to protect from lightning and follow traffic advisories in urban areas.

 The Special Relief Commissioner’s office has asked the collectors to remain prepared to handle any emergency caused due to the anticipated thunderstorm activity.
