Three Held For Attack On Everest Climber In Odisha’s Kalahandi

Bhawanipatna: Police arrested three persons for attacking mountaineer Jogabyasa Bhoi at Dahanramal village in Kalahandi district on Monday evening.

IIC of Kesinga police station, Deepanjali Pradhan said the three accused, Baldev Bhoi, his brother Upendra Bhoi and 17-year-old son have been arrested for attacking and injuring Bhoi with sticks and sharp objects. This happened when Bhoi had gone to Dahanramal village in the district on Sunday night. He was rescued by his friends and relatives when they came to know about the incident.

The IIC further said that Baldev had nursed a grudge against Jogabyasa since the last three years and was waiting for an opportunity to avenge the death of his son Lalu Prasad. “While Baldev and his brother were remanded to judicial custody on Wednesday, the minor son has been produced before the Juvenile Justice Board,” she added.

Talking to the media, the mountaineer said he had organised a mountaineering programme and took some local youths, including Lalu Prasad to Himachal Pradesh in October 2017. After trekking to Byasa Kunda, the team was returning to the base camp when Lalu Prasad fell sick and died during treatment. Since then, Baldev had developed animosity towards him and held him responsible for his son’s death.

Apart from Mt Everest, Bhoi has also scaled Mt Kilimanjaro, Mt Elbrus and Mt Aconcagua.
