Bhubaneswar: Several areas of Odisha, including coastal districts, are likely to experience light to moderate rain this week under the influence of a low pressure area over Bay of Bengal, which became more well marked on Tuesday.

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system is likely to move north-northwestwards during the next 24 hours over westcentral Bay of Bengal, maintaining its intensity. Thereafter, it is likely to recurve north-northeastwards and weaken gradually over central Bay of Bengal during the subsequent 24 hours.

Indication by weather models

Most of the numerical models (ECMWF, NCEP GFS, IMD GFS) are indicating northwestwards movement of the system during the next 24 hours, followed by north northeastwards movement over westcentral Bay of Bengal thereafter during the subsequent 24 hours. Models are not indicating any further intensification of the system, which is also supported by unfavourable wind shear over the central Bay of Bengal.

However, there is also a low probability of its intensification into a depression over westcentral Bay of Bengal during the next 24 hours. Thereafter, it is likely to recurve nearly north-northeastwards and weaken gradually over central BoB during the subsequent 24 hours, the IMD said in its tropical weather outlook.

Impact on Odisha

While the first low pressure of this year’s summer season is unlikely to have a significant impact on Odisha as it is expected to lose steam in the sea, it could push moisture carrying winds from the Bay of Bengal towards the state, triggering light to moderate rain in the state till April 14.

The weather agency has also warned of thunderstorm activity with strong winds reaching 40-50 kmph in several districts of the state on April 9-10-11.

On April 8, thunderstorm with lightning may occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar districts. Light rain is also likely in some parts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar Sundargarh, Rayagada, Koraput, Angul and Dhenkanal.

FORECAST FOR APRIL 9-10-11

Similar weather conditions is likely to prevail in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Dhenkanal on April 13, and Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Angul, and Dhenkanal on April 14, with little change thereafter.

The MeT office further stated that the day temperature is likely to fall by 2-3 degree Celsius during the next 3 days and rise by 2-4 degree Celsius thereafter.
