Bhubaneswar: Thunderstorm activity along with lightning and gusty surface winds may continue in Odisha till May 19, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Friday.
Hot and humid conditions may also prevail in some parts of Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Cuttack and Jagatsinghpur districts on May 16-17. Though the day temperature is unlikely to witness any large change during the next 6-7 days, the mercury may hover around 40°C in the isolated pockets of Angul, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Kalahandi, Balangir, Sonepur, Boudh, Bargarh and Nuapada.
Orange warning with regards to thunderstorm activity has been issued on May 16-17.
May 16: Thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 50-60kmph may occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in Koraput, Rayagada, Ganjam, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda and Sundargarh.
May 17: Thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 50-60kmph may occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada.
The national forecaster also issued an advisory for these districts, where it said strong winds can damage standing crops, banana trees, loose/unsecured/vulnerable structures. People have been advised to move to safer places during the thunderstorm activity to protect from lightning.
