Bhubaneswar: Thunderstorm activity along with lightning and gusty surface winds may continue in Odisha till May 18, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Wednesday.
Though the weather agency has forecast no large change in the day temperature during the next 6-7 days, the mercury may continue to hover around 40°C and above in isolated pockets of Bargarh, Boudh, Sonepur, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda and Angul amid the prevailing sultry weather conditions.
Yellow warning for hot and humid has been issued for one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar districts on May 14-15.
On May 14, thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph may also occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in Nabarangpur, Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam districts.
Strong winds may damage standing crops, banana trees, loose/unsecured/vulnerable structures in these six districts. People have been advised to move to safer places during the thunderstorm activity to protect from lightning, the IMD said.
Thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40- 50 kmph is also likely in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in Kalahandi, Nuapada, Balangir, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khurda and Puri. There is also a forecast for thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30- 40 kmph in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in Sundargarh, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar.
