Kolkata: A fresh political confrontation erupted between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after a video purportedly showing TMC chief Mamata Banerjee slapping a man during a protest march over the alleged rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl in Baruipur went viral.
The BJP alleged that Banerjee had assaulted one of her own party workers, with several leaders sharing the video on social media and accusing the former West Bengal chief minister of losing her temper in front of people. The party claimed the incident reflected growing discord within the TMC.
Rejecting the allegations, the TMC dismissed the BJP’s claims and said the video was being deliberately misrepresented for political gain. Party leaders maintained that Banerjee was attempting to control the crowd amid the chaos during the protest march and accused the BJP of spreading misinformation.
The controversy comes in the wake of a high-voltage protest led by Banerjee over the alleged rape and murder of a minor in Baruipur. The march witnessed tense scenes, with TMC and BJP supporters engaging in sloganeering and confrontations at several locations. Banerjee later alleged that BJP supporters attacked the rally and assaulted women participants, while also accusing the police of acting in a partisan manner. The BJP denied the allegations and countered that TMC workers had provoked the clashes.
The viral video has since become the latest issue in the ongoing political battle between the two parties, with both sides using the incident to target each other as tensions continue to escalate in West Bengal.
