Berhampur: TP Southern Odisha Distribution Limited (TPSODL), a joint venture between Tata Power and the Odisha government, has issued a strong warning to consumers in Nabarangpur district against unauthorised and illegal reconnections of electricity supply.

The utility has reported the matter to the police and initiated action against those involved in such unlawful activities. TPSODL has also urged consumers to refrain from such practices and follow legal procedures for restoration of electricity supply.

On March 12, TPSODL staff from the Nabarangpur Electrical Division (under Jeypore Circle) detected an unauthorised reconnection in Kerla village under Kosagumuda police limits. The individual involved was allegedly restoring power to consumers whose supplies had been disconnected for non-payment of dues. TPSODL promptly lodged a complaint with the police, supported by photographic and video evidence.

Just two days later,  another incident came to light in Ladhupada village under Chandahandi police limits. A suspect, identified as Gobardhan Gauda from the same village, was found illegally reconnecting disconnected lines. A formal case has been registered, and relevant evidence has been handed over to police, who have assured necessary action.

Additionally, TPSODL identified large-scale illegal reconnections in Koilari village under Dabugaon police limits, where around 40 disconnected connections were reportedly restored unlawfully. Complaints have been filed, and evidence submitted for legal action against the suspected persons.

TPSODL condemned these activities, noting that they cause significant financial losses to the company, undermine legitimate recovery efforts, and create substantial risks to public safety. Unauthorized interference with electrical infrastructure can result in electrocution, fires, accidents, and broader dangers.

The company stressed that tampering with power lines or illegally reconnecting disconnected supplies constitutes a punishable offence under the Electricity Act. Those who assist or enable such acts may also face charges related to electricity theft and unauthorised usage, potentially leading to fines, recovery of outstanding dues, additional penalties, and criminal prosecution.

TPSODL urged consumers to clear pending dues and authorised restoration of supply by approaching company offices directly. The utility advised against hiring unauthorised individuals for any electricity-related work.
