Washington: There’s no stopping Donald Trump and his war against ‘tariff abusers’.
Three days after China hit back at the US with 34% retaliatory tariffs on all American products, President Trump targeted Beijing again for its retaliation.
On Monday, Trump said he will slap an additional 50% tariffs on China, which would take effect if China doesn’t remove its 34% retaliatory tariff by April 8.
In a move which will further escalate the global trade war that has caused a bloodbath in stock markets, Trump also said that meetings China had requested would be cancelled, even as other countries will begin negotiating on trade immediately.
“China issued Retaliatory Tariffs of 34%, on top of their already record setting Tariffs, Non-Monetary Tariffs, Illegal Subsidization of companies, and massive long term Currency Manipulation, despite my warning that any country that Retaliates against the U.S. by issuing additional Tariffs, above and beyond their already existing long term Tariff abuse of our Nation, will be immediately met with new and substantially higher Tariffs, over and above those initially set. Therefore, if China does not withdraw its 34% increase above their already long term trading abuses by tomorrow, April 8th, 2025, the United States will impose ADDITIONAL Tariffs on China of 50%, effective April 9th. Additionally, all talks with China concerning their requested meetings with us will be terminated! Negotiations with other countries, which have also requested meetings, will begin taking place immediately. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social on Monday morning (Washington time).
If the new duty does come into effect, it will take US’ tariff on all Chinese goods to an all-time high of 84 per cent. Add the 10 per cent global tariff, which is applicable to all nations worldwide, and you get a staggering 94 per cent duties Chinese goods coming into US.
