Balasore: A tragic road accident on Wednesday turned a joyful wedding celebration into a scene of mourning when a van, carrying 16 people, including women and children, veered off National Highway 16 and slammed into a tree near Kuniari Square under Simulia police station limits in Odisha’s Balasore district.
One person was killed on the spot, while 15 others sustained injuries.

According to sources, 16 people including women and children had travelled from Duduma to Kolkata in neighbouring West Bengal to attend a wedding. The mishap took place while they were returning home in Bhadrak district.
Locals, who witnessed the crash, immediately informed police and dialled for ambulances. While one person died on the spot, the injured passengers were rushed to the Community Health Centre (CHC) at Simulia. A few critically injured were later shifted to district headquarters hospital at Bhadrak.
Simulia Police has reached the spot and begun an investigation into the cause of the crash.
