Train Travel Tips For Pets/Dogs
Dogs can travel in the train. There are two options:
Any class, except 1st class compartment
Book the dogs in the goods booking centre on the day you would like the dog to travel. After the booking is done, you will have to take the dog to the brake van (generally at the end of the train) where the dog crate (cage) is located and leave it in the crate. Please keep in mind that there are very few crates in a train.
It is first come first serve basis. If someone books his or her dog before you, then you will lose the chance. If you are travelling in the same train, remember to go and check your pet/dog at the stations where the train halts. However, you will have to arrange for the pick up of the dogs at the destination point. Please note that this kind of travel may increase the stress level of the pet/dog. Consult your vet before boarding.
Only 1st class compartment
This procedure is the best (personal opinion) option. Two people should travel along with the pet. One person is not an option. The reason being, if you travel in 1st class compartment (whether its AC or not), then there is a coupe compartment and there is a four seater compartment where you can travel along with your pet in the same compartment. If you don’t book the whole compartment, then other passengers may object. Once you get a confirmed ticket, please take a copy of the ticket and an application for a coupe (if two people are travelling with the pet) and submit it either on the date of journey or one day before in the office of the chief reservation officer. Once the chart is prepared, your PNR number will indicate whether you have got a coupe or not as the “C” (coupe) sign will be printed on the final chart.
Once you get that, take the pet/dog to the goods booking counter and tell them that you need to book the dog for travel along with you. Based on your confirmed ticket, the pet/dog will be weighed and booked. You will have to pay a nominal fee for that. Then take the booking receipt and walk into the first class compartment with your pet. This way the pet stays with you in the same compartment during the entire journey.
