Tranquilised Tusker Dies At Rescue Centre In Odisha; Overdose Suspected

Dhenkanal: A wild tusker, which was tranquilised and taken from Boudh to Kapilash Elephant Rescue Centre in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district died on Sunday.

While the exact reason of the elephant t’s death is yet to be ascertained, the wild tusker reportedly died hours after being relocated to Kapilash Elephant Rescue Centre. It was darted with a tranquiliser dose for the safe relocation, reports said.

The wild tusker was relocated by Forest department officials from Boudh district after it wreaked havoc in several villages. The tusker had reportedly killed two persons apart from destroying acres of farmlands. It also strayed into villages at night and damaged houses.

The wild animal was tranquilised and captured before being relocated to Dhenkanal in a special vehicle. After being shifted, the tusker was under examination and a special team was treating the wild mammal, sources said.

However, the elephant died on Sunday morning. The exact reason for its death will be known only after the arrival of post-mortem report, forest officials said.

As per reports, a scientific team from Bhubaneswar is proceeding to Dhenkanal for the autopsy of the animal.
