Kolkata: People ran out of offices and homes in Kolkata and surroundings on Friday afternoon after feeling tremors due to an earthquake, the epicenter of which was located in Bangladesh, close to the border with India. The earthquake took place at 1.22 pm.
The magnitude of the earthquake was between 4.9 and 5.4 as per various agencies. While no damage to life or property was reported, entire buildings shook. Some claimed that this was the strongest tremor they ever felt.
“We were just sitting down for lunch when everything started shaking. We just got up and ran down the stairs. People from other offices also joined us. It was scary,” an IT professional from New Town Sector-V said.
The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said that an earthquake of magnitude 5.4 struck Bangladesh on Friday, as reported by Reuters. The quake was at a depth of 35 km (21.75 miles), EMSC said.
On Thursday, a series of earthquakes were recorded in Sikkim, causing minor damage to property. Tremors were also felt in Siliguri, north Bengal. An earthquake was also reported in Assam.
Initial reports about Friday’s temblor said the quake was epicentred near Satkhira in the Khulna Division of Bangladesh.
