Bhubaneswar: A trial run for restoration of ropeway in Nandankanan Zoological Park near Bhubaneswar was conducted on Monday.
According to Nandankanan authorities, a team comprising 45 NDRF personnel from Mundali, security personnel of the zoo and doctors participated in a mock drill as part of the trial run. They checked the safety measures in case of any mechanical failure in the ropeway.
The ropeway has been installed between two towers. While one tower is located in the zoo, the other is in the Botanical Garden with the Kanjia lake between the two.
The ropeway features a mono-cable stretching upto 626 metre over the lake. Total 12 cabins with each having the capacity to accommodate 6 persons will move between the two towers.
The work on the project was started in October 2021 after Nandankanan authorities signed an agreement with Kolkata-based DRIL. The project is implemented on PPP mode with an investment of Rs 13 crore.
It may be noted that the ropeway services were stopped following a mishap last year. Thirteen tourists hung precariously from the ropeway as it snapped while people were enjoying a ride. Later, they were rescued by the zoo authorities after one-and-a-half hour of operation by security personnel.
