Agartala: In an incident that has come as a shock to the police fraternity across the country, Anurag Dhankar, the director general of police (DGP) of Tripura was found dead at his office in Agartala around noon on Monday.
The 1994-batch IPS officer is suspected to have taken his own life. The exact cause of death is not yet clear. While NDTV reported that he shot himself with his own service pistol, India Today claimed that Dhankar was found hanging.
He was immediately rushed to the Govind Ballabh Pant (GB) Hospital in Agartala, where doctors declared him dead.
“He was brought at the hospital at 12 pm, At that time he had no pulse, no blood pressure, no sign of life. We tried CPR over 40 minutes but could not revive him. He was finally declared dead at 12:48 pm. A post mortem will reveal the cause of death,” senior doctor Pradip Bhowmik said.
A high level probe has been ordered to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the incident.
Dhankar took charge as the DGP of Tripura in May 2025, succeeding Amitabh Ranjan. Before becoming the state’s police chief, he served as director general (intelligence) in Tripura and had a distinguished career with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), where he handled several high-profile investigations, as reported by NDTV.
The officer was known for his professional approach and extensive policing experience.
“The whole police fraternity is in shock. However, his office has been sealed and all evidence secured. We will probe all angles and come to a conclusion,” a senior police official from the state said.
