Bhubaneswar: Vidyutprabha Devi’s rich contributions to Odia literature were fondly remembered at a function organised to celebrate her birth centenary at Rama Devi Women’s University.
The state-level celebration was organised by Odisha Sahitya Akademi with the support of the state government’s Odia Language, Literature & Culture department.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who was the Chief Guest, said he was honoured to to be part of “great literary figure” Vidyutprabha Devi’s centenary celebration.
“Her early dedication to literature and her enduring passion have inspired generations. When one speaks of feminist voices in Odia poetry, her name stands tall. She is a true symbol of women’s empowerment and her writings continue to guide and inspire us. In this age of Artificial Intelligence, we must use technology to promote and expand the reach of Odia literature to a global audience,” Pradhan said in his address.
Padma Bhushan awardee and eminent writer Dr Pratibha Ray, who was Guest of Honour, described Vidyutprabha as an exceptional poet. “Her works enriched Odia literature significantly. Her poetry, rooted in feminism and socialism, evokes deep emotional resonance. Love and pain both find voice in her verses,” Ray said.
State Culture minister Suryabanshi Suraj lauded Vidyutprabha as a “powerful advocate of feminism and a shining example of women’s strength.”
Emphasising the crucial role of women in achieving the Vision of Vikshit Odisha 2036 and Vikshit Bharat 2047, Suraj said, “Our efforts must focus not only on national progress but also on making Odia language and literature globally celebrated.”
Ekamra MLA Babu Singh praised Vidyutprabha as the “guiding light of Odia literature,” and hoped her ideals would continue to inspire the youth to work towards building a strong society.
Prof. Sachidananda Mohanty, former Central University, Koraput vice-chancellor and son of Vidyutprabha, offered insightful reflections on her literary journey and contributions.
A painting workshop based on the life and legacy of Vidyutprabha was inaugurated by Pradhan, where artists brought to life her inspiring persona through their art.
A panel discussion on the life and works of Vidyutprabha was also held.
