New Delhi: US President Donald Trump conveyed heartfelt congratulations to India on its 77th Republic Day, stressing on the “historic bond” between the world’s oldest and largest democracies.
In a message shared by the US Embassy in New Delhi on X shortly after the grand parade on Kartavya Path, Trump highlighted shared democratic values amid ongoing bilateral engagements.
“On behalf of the people of the United States, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the government and people of India as you celebrate your 77th Republic Day,” Trump stated. “The United States and India share a historic bond as the world’s oldest and largest democracies.”
The message arrived as India hosted European leaders European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as chief guests.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed similar sentiments, praising deepened cooperation in defense, energy, critical minerals, emerging technologies, and the Quad framework.
“From our close cooperation… to our multi-layered engagement through the Quad, the US-India relationship delivers real results for our two countries and for the Indo-Pacific region,” Rubio said.
The greetings come against a backdrop of robust strategic ties, including defense pacts and technology transfers, even as trade frictions persist over US tariffs on Indian textiles and jewelry. Trump’s administration, post-reelection, has prioritized Indo-Pacific stability, with India as a key counterweight to China. Indian officials welcomed the overture, noting it reinforces people-to-people links for over 4 million Indian Americans.
Prime Minister Modi responded on X, thanking Trump and affirming the partnership’s strength. The exchange symbolizes enduring US-India camaraderie on a day marking India’s constitutional adoption in 1950.
