New Delhi: In a major development, the Supreme Court has decided to take suo motu cognizance of the Twisha Sharma death case.
A bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant will hear the matter on May 25.
The bench will also include Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Vipul M Pancholi.
The court has listed the case under the title, ‘Alleged institutional bias and procedural discrepancies in the unnatural death of a young girl at her matrimonial home’.
The unnatural death of the 33-year-old Twisha, who hailed from Noida, has stirred the entire nation.
She was found dead at her in-laws’ residence under mysterious circumstances on May 12. Her husband Samarth Singh’s family has alleged that she was struggling with drug addiction, while Twisha’s parents firmly denied those claims and accused her in-laws of harassing her over dowry demands.
Twisha’s body remains at the mortuary of AIIMS Bhopal as legal and forensic procedures in the investigation continue.
A team of four senior doctors from AIIMS Delhi has reached Bhopal to conduct the second autopsy of Twisha’s body.
The MP High Court gave that directive after Twisha’s family questioned the findings of the initial postmortem and demanded an independent forensic examination.
Samarth, a lawyer, had been absconding for 10 days following his wife’s death before he surrendered on Friday.
A Bhopal court has sent accused Samarth to a seven-day police remand on Saturday.
