Chennai: Tamil superstar Vijay must be realising that politics is far more complex than acting in films.
Shortly after the three-day drama over his party forming the government in Tamil Nadu seemed to have ended, there are fresh twists in the tale which could jeopardise Vijay’s taking oath as chief minister on Saturday morning.
Having fallen short of the majority mark of 118 by 11 seats, Vijay’s party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) scrambled to get support from other parties. The Congress was quick to lend a helping hand with its 5 MLAs, and other parties like CPI, CPI(M), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) – all previous allies of DMK — agreed to pitch in with their 2 seats each, reported ANI.
After hectic parleys with the ‘smaller’ players, Vijay met Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Friday evening – third time in three days – and assured him of support of 118 MLAs.
However, complications arose as the VCK and IUML are yet to send formal letters to Lok Bhavan, sources told India Today TV.
IUML has reportedly ruled out supporting TVK after three rounds of futile talks about alliance conditions, and said it will continue in the DMK-led alliance.
VCK chief Thol. Thirumavalavan held a crucial meeting with outgoing chief minister MK Stalin amid growing speculation over alliance equations with TVK.
In another development, Amma Makkal Munnettra Kazagam (AMMK) — with one seat in its kitty — submitted a letter to Governor Arlekar extending support to AIADMK general secretary Edappadi Palanisami to form the new government in the state.
“I am supporting AIADMK. I have submitted this letter in support of Edappadi Palaniswami to form the government. Our MLA Kamaraj has also signed it and sent it through my secretary,” general secretary TV Dhinakaran told ANI.
Dhinakaran went on to make a serious allegation.
“When I saw TVK, I was shocked. because there was some other letter – maybe a forged letter, or it may be horse-trading. I called up my MLA, but I was not able to reach him… He signed this letter around 6.30 pm and sent it here. When I saw on TV that our party had supported Vijay, I was shocked. So, I got an appointment with the Governor and I have submitted the letter to him, asking him to investigate that. I feel it is forged or horse trading…He should not allow this…”-
It seems the last has not been heard about the new government in Tamil Nadu as another night of uncertainty looms.
