Puri/Konark: Police on Thursday detained two persons in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a 25-year-old woman, who was rescued from a room near Konark Market Complex in Puri district the previous day.
Additional SP Gagarin Mohanty said they are being interrogated for more evidence on the case.
The woman, a native of West Bengal, was allegedly held captive and gang-raped for over 10 days by at least six persons. Police with the help of fire brigade personnel had rescued her by breaking open the door of the room after she screamed for help from the terrace and was spotted by locals.
Meanwhile, State Congress and BJP women wing members met the survivor at Puri district headquarters hospital and enquired about her health.
Congress leader Sumitra Jena and BJP Mahila Morcha State unit president Prabhati Paridahad also interacted with her.
Following the meeting, both Pravati and Sumitra criticised the Odisha government and the district police for their failure to check crime against women in the state.
According to sources, the woman reportedly escorted to Konark by a middleman who promised her a job. She was, however, locked up in a room at Konark Market Complex, about 2 km away from the Sun Temple, and forced into prostitution, the sources added.
