Two Earthquakes Hit Nepal, Tremors Felt In Delhi-NCR [Watch]

New Delhi: Strong tremors were felt in parts of Delhi-NCR after two earthquakes of magnitude 6.2 and 4.6 on the Richter Scale struck Nepal on Tuesday afternoon, according to the National Center for Seismology.

Two earthquakes occurred within a span of less than half an hour. The first earthquake, which hit the Himalayan country at 14:25:52 IST, had a magnitude of 4.6 and a depth of 10 km. The second earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.2, occurred at 14:51:04 IST, and its depth was reported as 5 km. “The 6.2 M earthquake struck west Nepal. Its around 200 km southeast of Joshimath. This is at shallow depth so strong tremors have been felt over north India. There are many faults in the Himalayan region. Its a very active region tectonically. We are checking which faults are involved,” head of office, National Center for Seismology, JL Gautam was quoted as saying.

The tremors lasted nearly one minute and people were seen rushing out of houses and office blocks in parts of New Delhi. The Delhi Police posted on social media platform X, “Hey Delhi people! We hope you all are safe. Please come out of your buildings to a safe spot, but do not panic. DO NOT USE ELEVATORS! For any emergency help, dial 112”.

People in Uttarakhand and a few areas in Bihar also experienced earthquake tremors. However, there were no immediate reports of damage or casualty in India or Nepal.
