Two Mutations Per Month Not Cause Of Concern: AIIMS Director

New Delhi: AIIMS-Delhi Director Dr Randeep Guleria on Saturday said new coronavirus strains are not a cause of concern for India.

Stating that there have been many mutations over the last 10 months and this is quite common, he said an average of two mutations per month doesn’t require any changes in symptoms or treatment.

“The mutations have not led to any change in symptoms and treatment strategy. According to current data, the vaccines in the trial phase (which are up for emergency authorisation) should also be effective against the new (UK) strain,” he explained.

He further said the UK strain raised alarm only on account of being more infectious and doesn’t increase fatality or change line of treatment.

Guleria also said six to seven vaccines are expected to be available in India by mid-2021. A long-lasting vaccine can be developed once enough data is available. Currently, the vaccine will be free for frontline workers.
