Edmonton: Two Indian students from the state of Punjab were shot dead in Edmonton, Canada on Friday morning. The police have claimed that it was a “targeted attack”.

The students have been identified as Gurdeep Singh (27), a resident of Bareh village, and Ranveer Singh (18) from Uddat Saidewala village in the Budhlada subdivision of Punjab’s Mansa district, as per timesnow.in.

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has said that officers responded to reports of gunfire near 32 Street and 26 Avenue in southeast Edmonton at around 1.43 am. Upon reaching the spot, the police found two men with gunshot wounds. The officers attempted lifesaving measures until emergency medical services arrived, but both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

The two were on their way to join a party thrown by friends, family members said.

Homicide detectives have taken over the investigation and the deaths are being treated as “suspicious”, the police said. No suspects have been identified or arrested so far, it was reported by the Edmonton Journal. Autopsies have been scheduled for next week to determine the exact cause of death.

According to family members, the two had travelled to Canada at different times to pursue higher studies. Gurdeep had reportedly completed his studies and was awaiting his work permit at the time of his death.

The police are seeking information about a dark-coloured SUV believed to have been in the area around the time of the shooting. Investigators have also appealed to residents and motorists to share any dashcam or security camera footage from nearby streets.

“We are looking for a dark-coloured SUV that may have been in the area at the time of the shooting,” the police said in a statement.

“Investigators are asking anyone in the area of Silverberry Road and 23 Avenue, as well as 34 Street and 29 Street, who may have dash camera or security footage from approximately 2 pm on Thursday, Dec 11, to 2:30 am on Friday, Dec 12, 2025, to contact police immediately,” it added.
