Bhubaneswar: Authorities at Biju Patnaik International Airport in Odisha capital detained two individuals suspected of being Bangladeshi nationals after they were flagged by alert locals and a taxi driver.
According to sources, the men reportedly attempted to hire a cab but provided inconsistent details about their identities and intended destination, raising suspicions. The driver promptly informed nearby residents, who questioned the pair and discovered they lacked any valid proof of Indian citizenship or legal entry documents. The group then notified Airport Police, who took the suspects into custody for further verification.
Officers are currently interrogating them at the local station to confirm their nationalities, with sources indicating that deportation proceedings could follow if they are found to have entered illegally.
This detention adds to Odisha’s ongoing efforts to curb undocumented immigration, particularly from Bangladesh.
The state government, under Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, has ramped up operations following directives from both state and central authorities.
In a recent Assembly update earlier this month, CM Majhi revealed that 51 illegal Bangladeshi entrants had been identified statewide, with 49 already deported.
