Srinagar: A day after Indian external affairs minister S Jaishankar referred to Pakistan as the “epicentre of global terrorism” at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), two terrorists were gunned down by Indian armed forces close to the Line of Control (LoC) in the Keran sector of Kupwara, north Kashmir, on Sunday.
Despite India regularly calling out Pakistan for facilitating cross-border terrorism, infiltration bids are continuing. In most cases, the terrorists receive active support from Pakistan Rangers.
“An infiltration bid was thwarted along the LoC on Sunday. The bodies of the two terrorists are visible at the operation site. However, the operation is continuing and retrieval of the bodies will take place later,” an official said.
According to him, security forces successfully intercepted a group of terrorists attempting to infiltrate the Keran Sector of Kupwara district in north Kashmir near the Hyder post. During an intense firefight, two terrorists were neutralised. The identities of the deceased terrorists are currently under investigation as security personnel work to confirm their affiliations and backgrounds.
A comprehensive search operation is ongoing in the area to ensure no additional threats remain. Authorities are on high alert, and further details are expected as the situation develops.
“This operation highlights the vigilance of security forces in safeguarding the Line of Control (LoC) against infiltration attempts in the volatile region. It also indicates Pakistan’s attempts to foment trouble in Kashmir during the festive season,” the official added.
Pakistani prime minister Shehbaz Sharif, during his address at the UNGA session, had not brought up the issue of terrorism even once. He had spoken on Kashmir and India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty.
