Chandigarh: A woman travelling from Delhi airport to Gurugram has accused an Uber driver of turning a fare disagreement into a frightening confrontation, alleging confinement, physical aggression, abuse and threats outside her home in the early hours.
Tanisha Sharma, a software engineer and AI professional, alleged on X that an Uber driver demanded ₹1,479 for a Gurugram ride whose app fare was around ₹625. She said the driver showed her a screenshot from Rapido and claimed, “Iss route ka itna hi hota hai.”
“I paid the ₹625 that was shown on my Uber app. What followed was genuinely frightening. He locked the car and refused to let me take my luggage out unless I paid ₹1,479. When I tried retrieving my belongings, he held my arm and shut the front-seat window where my luggage was, trying to stop me from taking it out,” she wrote.
She further alleged that the driver followed her home and tried to prevent her from entering peacefully, as reported by The New Indian Express. “I finally managed to get inside and lock the door. He then started climbing the gate while hurling abuses and threatening my life,” she said.
Safety And Action
Sharma also criticised Uber’s safety support, saying, “I’m trying to reach Uber’s safety support, and the safety support option isn’t available to me.” She added, “This wasn’t a fare dispute anymore. This was intimidation, physical aggression and a terrifying violation of my safety at my own doorstep.”
She sought an investigation and preservation of records: “I need an urgent human response, a proper investigation and concrete action. Please preserve the trip and driver records.” She identified the driver as Jamil Jahid Khan.
Uber said the allegations were “deeply concerning,” adding that such conduct violates its Community Guidelines. “We have removed the driver’s access to the Uber app. We stand ready to support law enforcement authorities with any information they may require,” the company said.
Gurugram police said they had taken cognisance of the social-media post and were investigating, while attempting to contact the woman for her complaint. The post prompted widespread calls for her to file a police case and for stronger passenger-safety mechanisms on ride-hailing platforms.
