New Delhi: Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Tuesday said the evacuation of Indian students in Ukraine’s Sumy has started and they were being taken in buses to Poltava.
“Last night, I checked with the control room, 694 Indian students were remaining in Sumy. Today, they have all left in buses for Poltava,” Puri was quoted as saying by PTI.
Five students from Odisha are stuck in Sumy without food and water. They are Smruti Ranjan Nayak, Gouri Shankar Parida, Tapan Kumar Bugudei, Biswajit Das and Suman Mahanta. All are students of Sumy State Medical University.
The evacuation of civilians from Sumy started after Russia announced fresh humanitarian corridors from Sumy to Poltava in central Ukraine and Belgorod in Russia, from where they will be taken “by air, rail and road to their destinations”.
India earlier raised concerns over its stranded students in Sumy at the UN Security Council.
Sumy lies in northeast Ukraine, from where it’s difficult to reach the western border with Poland, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and Moldova, from where planes are airlifting fleeing civilians.
